Is obesity the silent enemy of the church? According to many doctors, we are fighting an epidemic and it’s slowly killing us. The problem is we don’t recognize that the enemy is on our plates.
Check out these facts about obesity:
- More than 2 in 3 adults are considered to be overweight or obese according to a National Health and Nutrition Survey in 2010.
- The Center for Disease Controls projects that 42 percent of Americans will be obese by 2030

While you may not be overweight or fear this for yourself, obesity is crippling the church. I have personally felt its increasing effects over the last decade. What woke me up and caused me to take notice is a book by Dr. Michael Brown called Breaking the Stronghold of Food. In there he explores how we become addicted to food, how that steals our joy and life, and can ultimately kill us.
In this episode of Man in the Pew, Mark Mason, an engineer by day and founder of Late Night Internet Marketing by night, shares his own personal journey with food and how his doctor provided him just the wake-up call he needed.
ABOUT THIS SHOW:
- Mark shares his doctor’s projection that he would have diabetes by age 60
- Mark unveils research that led him to change his diet
- Phil and Mark explore practical steps men can take to start losing weight today

RESOURCES
Mark referenced Cliff Ravenscraft as the main impetus and counselor during his 90-day experiment. Cliff documents the beginning of his journey here.
The book most influential for Cliff was Younger Next Year which shares much of the science of weight loss. It’s not Christian, but there is a lot of great value especially understanding the importance of exercise.
You may recall George Thomas shared his personal wake-up call when he had a heart attack in episode 021.
For a good review of literature on why exercise isn’t the key answer to your weight loss goals, see this article from Vox.com.
